What is Your Sleep Personality

Your personality could say a lot about your sleeping habits. Or, your sleeping habits could say a lot about your personality. Although it’s a bit of a chicken and egg conundrum, the truth is that early risers tend to be Logistical, down-to-earth types while night owls are more open-minded and Imaginative.

In a study correlating sleep habits with personality, psychologists at Poland’s University of Warsaw also found that early-risers tend to be more self-disciplined while their late-night counterparts are straight-shooting extraverts.

Lending more weight to the personality connection is the fact the study employed a combination of participant survey and DNA testing, meaning personality – which is a combination of genetic heritage and social engineering – certainly plays a role.

But it also brings us back to the chicken-egg challenge and whether personality (let’s call it the chicken) is driving sleep behavior or vice versa.

Lead author Anita Lenneis points out that people with Enthusiastic personalities naturally seek out high-energy, stimulating activities. Which means they may engage in the kinds of risky behaviors (alcohol use, sexual promiscuity, etc.) that generally take place at night.

Similarly, Logistical types “are on time and do not oversleep, so they might go to bed earlier so that they do not miss important meetings,” says Lenneis.

Now it’s the egg’s turn.

According to Lenneis, it’s entirely possible a person’s chronotype (sleep habits) influence their personality. Someone who is especially alert during the evening, for example, may be more willing to try out a restaurant, late show, or bar – habits that also happen to be indicative of open-minded personalities.

Ultimately, however, Lenneis suggests: “Personality and chronotype might mutually influence each other, which is supported by our findings that personality and chronotype also correlate with each other at a genetic level.”
